Computer Savvy
An increasing number of people unwittingly experience Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) with symptons including headaches and eyestrain.
While the majority of CVS complaints are made by the over 40s or those who need glasses for reading, there is also a growing number of children who are using computers who could benefit from computer eyewear. Remember children are now using computers from a very early age with more than half of all five year olds now using computers or playing on console games.
It may be that when children stop looking at the screen they will often have problems focusing. But they may not be able to articulate their CVS symptons, so parents need to be aware of some changes in behaviour such as drops in grades.
For both young and old, special eyewear prescribed for computer work and other near tasks can help people maintain proper focus on the computer screen with less eye fatigue. These lenses will make the computer screen clear and more comfortable to read for prolonged periods of time.
Even if you already own a pair of specs for general use, a pair with lenses specially for use at the computer will almost certainly bring many benefits.
The main benefit of office lenses is that you can see the screen and read text with the same pair of glasses. With single vision lenses wearers have to continually swap between two pairs. In general computer lenses mean a more natural posture and less fatigue as they optimize vision in the near and intermediate distance. Standard progressive lenses only have a small portion of the lens that corrects for intermediate and reading zone. Without proper computer eyewear, many standard progressive lens wearers experience the symptons of CVS. Even worse, many try to compensate for blurred vision by leaning or tipping their head back in an effort to see the computer screen clearly. This poor posture can result in a sore neck, sore shoulders and a sore back. In addition to allowing for better ergonomic posture, computer lenses also provide a comfortable viewing area that is longer and wider in the intermediate and near zones of vision.
Also when purchasing your computer eyewear it is well worth considering an anti-reflective coating. This will keep light from reflecting off the lens surfaces preventing additional glare. These coatings also make the lenses easier to clean and more resistant to scratching.
